Shaping my Success

Shaping my Success

$550.00

"The American Dream” is a narrative that is sold/told to almost every soul that sets foot in this country. We are told that anything is possible because this is “the land of opportunity”. Part of that is true, this land is opportunistic. To quote Matthew Desmond from a 2019 New York Times Magazine article, “Given the choice between modernity and barbarism, prosperity and poverty, lawfulness and cruelty, democracy and totalitarianism, America chose all of the above”. The opportunistic country I live in has constantly told black people that it is no ones fault but our own, that we have not managed to do more with our time.; while simultaneously telling us that we are only fit to do certain menial things. If it was not clear before, the continued Black Lives Matter movement has reminded everyone, that black success is not defined by white measures. Personally, my success is shaped by my ability to engage in my history and to share that experience with others. My success was shaped by my ancestors dreaming about me centuries ago. My success lies in every part of my daily existence. I am already successful. This piece represent all of these thoughts. It reminds me of the perfect design that is me; the perfect design that is you too. Happy Juneteenth.
